Redding Republican Town Committee Supports Adopt A Platoon Program

(Redding, June 12) The Redding Republican Town Committee is joining the Adopt A Platoon Program, which matches servicemen and women overseas with individuals and organizations back home. The program requests a commitment to write to the soldier once a week and to send one package a month. "This is a great program that was brought to our attention by Urs and Trevor Furrer, two RTC members", stated RTC Chairman Ward Mazzucco. "It was enthusiastically embraced by our membership. But we hope to expand beyond just the RTC members, and invite all Redding residents, regardless of their party affiliation, to join us in sending cards, letters, and packages to our troops." Recommended items include energy bars, candy, crackers, instant coffee, nuts, contract lens cleaner, DEET, mouthwash, sunscreen, hats, socks, magazines, disposable cameras, and stationery. A full list can be found at www.adoptaplatoon.com. Information will also be available on the RTC's website at reddingrepublicans.org. "I know how important this program can be", stated RTC committee member Andrea Cotton. "My son served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine reservist. While he always had lots of mail and packages, not everyone was as lucky. There are some soldiers who just don't have the support system that he had. A card, letter, or package can mean so much to some of these young men and women." The Redding RTC will be collecting items once a month at their regularly scheduled meetings. The next RTC meeting is Monday, June 5th, at 8:00 pm at Town Hall. The RTC will also be collecting items at its booth at Georgetown Day, which is being held June 11th. A full list of items and future collection dates will also be available at the RTC booth at Georgetown Day.
