(Redding, March10) The Redding Republican Town Committee has announced that it will fund scholarships for two Redding high school students, who are currently juniors or seniors, to attend this year’s Week on Washington program, scheduled to take place June 25-30. The winning students would join a group of 50 from across the state, who would be participating in the program. The normal cost for the program is $795; the RTC scholarships would defray half of that amount. The Week on Washington program includes travel to, in, and from Washington DC via motor coach; housing at Georgetown University; most meals; and all activities. Week on Washington is designed to give participants an up-close and personal view of Washington by providing them with the opportunities to meet and speak with key individuals and organizations involved with government and politics. Last year, speakers included members of Congress Christopher Shays, Nancy Johnson and Rob Simmons. Presentations were given at the Supreme court, the Pentagon. The Washington Times, the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute. Students also participated in a team-based computer simulation of being a member of Congress for two years. Evening activities included a moonlight tour of the monuments, a Potomac River cruise, a performance at the Kennedy Center, and an Orioles baseball game. Chris Berry, a Joel Barlow junior, described his Week on Washington last year as “an incredibly great experience…. something that if you have the opportunity, you should definitely take advantage of and do! We got to meet with senators, congressmen and look at the infrastructure of government they way we never would have otherwise. You also make great contacts down there…and I’ve remained in touch with our Congressman, Christopher Shays.” Ward Mazzucco, Chairman of the Redding RTC, said, “We support the Week on Washington program and offer these scholarships as part of commitment to encourage our young peoples’ interest in and understanding of our governmental process. It is our hope that from programs like this might emerge our governmental leaders of tomorrow.” Anyone interested in obtaining more information on Week on Washington can contact RTC Chairman, Ward Mazzucco at 938-9861. Applications can also be downloaded here: or can be picked up at the Joel Barlow guidance office and at Town Hall. Deadline for applications is May 1, 2006.
